Morgan Silver Dollars occupy a distinguished position in the history of American coinage. Struck by the US Mint from 1878 to 1904 and briefly again in 1921, they served as the nation’s official dollar coin.

Designed by George T. Morgan, these iconic coins were minted at various US Mint facilities, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City. However, production at the Carson City branch ended in 1893 when its coinage operations were discontinued.

Those coins minted with the “O” mint mark were issued in the New Orleans Mint.

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance accompany the image.

The reverse features the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

It also contains the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
