1885-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin - BU - GSA with box & COA

The Morgan Silver Dollar, the official circulating U.S. dollar coin from 1878 to 1904, was named after its designer, George T. Morgan. Each coin contained 0.7734 troy ounces of silver.

After its initial run, the Morgan Dollar was briefly reissued in 1921 before being replaced by the Peace Dollar. In 2021, a special commemorative edition was released to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its final year of minting.

Morgan Dollars were produced at various U.S. Mint branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City.

The Carson City Mint ceased operations in 1893, but some Morgan Dollars minted there were later discovered in U.S. Treasury reserves. The General Services Administration (GSA) eventually sold these coins to the public in the 1970s, making them rare and highly prized by collectors.

The Design

Lady Liberty’s bust, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY,” is portrayed on the obverse.

It also features the motto “‘E PLURIBUS UNUM,”’ thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse consists of a Bald Eagle’s depiction with outstretched wings, arrows, olive branches on its talons, and laurels surrounding it. 

The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” complete the design.
