1884-O PCGS MS-64 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin

From 1878 to 1904, Morgan Dollars were the dollar coins in circulation in the United States. Designed by George T. Morgan, the US Mint produced these coins, each containing .7734 ounces of silver. 

Morgan Dollars were reintroduced in 1921, and in 2021, the US Mint issued a special edition to commemorate the centennial of their last mintage. 

The coins were minted at various branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, the latter of which ceased its coinage operations in 1893.

Those issued in the New Orleans Mint carry the “O” mint mark.

The Design

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance complete the artistry.

The reverse displays the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

It is accompanied by the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR,” and the “O” mint mark from the New Orleans Mint.
