The Carson City Mint, a branch of the US Mint, was known for producing American silver coins, most notably the Morgan Silver Dollars, before ceasing operations in 1893. 

Among these were Morgan Dollars minted between 1882 and 1884, which were hoarded in the US Treasury until the General Services Administration (GSA) authorized their public sale in 1970.

These Morgan Dollars, in particular, were taken from Carson City's original bag fragment and submitted to NGC appraisal.

The Design

The obverse showcases Chief Engraver George T. Morgan’s Lady Liberty in a left profile bust, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara engraved with “LIBERTY.” 

Her effigy is encircled by the motto “‘E PLURIBUS UNUM,”’ thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance at the bottom.

The reverse portrays a Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, carrying arrows and olive branches, surrounded by laurels. On top of the Eagles’ head read, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and on the border, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
