1881-S NGC MS-63 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

Morgan Silver Dollars are one of the most popular silver dollars worldwide.

From 1878 to 1904, the US Mint massively produced Morgan Dollars. With a diameter of 38mm, weighing .7734 oz of 90% pure silver, and reeded edges, Morgan Dollars featured two iconic symbols of American pride: the Bald Eagle and Lady Liberty.

The US Mint produced Morgan Dollars in various branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.

The coins bearing the “S” mint mark indicate they were issued in the San Francisco Mint.

Today, SD Bullion offers 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, graded and certified by NGC as MS-63 coins.

The Design

Morgan dollars were named after their design creator, the US Mint Chief Engraved George T. Morgan.

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty in a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara bearing the inscription “LIBERTY.”

The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance are part of the artistry.

The reverse displays the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it.

It also contains the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed above the eagle’s head, the “S” mint mark from the San Francisco branch appears beneath the Eagle, and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the entire design.

An NGC MS-63 Coin

NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company works independently from sovereign mints to appraise and grade coins. It uses the Sheldon Grading Scale to rank coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
