Traditionally, Native American women did not wear headdresses, but we were inspired by the story of Minnie Hollow Wood, who as a young Lakota woman, earned the right to wear a war bonnet due to the valor she displayed in combat against the U.S. Calvary in the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876 when she would have been approximately 20 years old.

The Design

The obverse showcases a very realistic depiction of an American bison in a frontal close-up, with staring gaze. The only inscription on this side refers to the rounds weight of “I TROY OUNCE.” The image is accompanied by the Scottsdale Mint privy mark on the lower left.

The reverse portrays a young Native girl wearing a feathered headdress. Additional engravings correspond to the round’s purity and metal content, reading “9999 FINE SILVER.”
