The Design
Every Goldback note features a female allegorical figure embodying a particular virtue. The Idaho 2 Goldback highlights Civitas, the virtue of community, represented through Idaho’s rich Basque heritage. The artwork is set within Boise’s Basque Block and depicts a traditional Basque dancer performing with ribboned hoops, symbolizing unity, shared labor, and cultural cohesion.
Supporting elements further reflect the historical Basque influence in Idaho. The Boise Mountains and grazing sheep honor early Basque immigrants who worked as sheepherders, while the Idaho State Capitol signifies their long-lasting contributions to the state’s development. The Basque Museum is also shown, recognizing the community’s ongoing efforts to preserve language, traditions, and history. The denomination “2” appears alongside “IDAHO GOLDBACKS,” with the weight and purity inscribed at the bottom near the Basque phrase “Denon artean egina, erraz egina,” meaning “What is done together is easier to accomplish.”
The reverse mirrors the obverse artwork, consistent with the construction of all Goldback notes.
Goldback Notes
Goldbacks are crafted by layering precise amounts of 24-karat gold within a durable polymer film, creating a flexible bullion product shaped like traditional currency. While not legal tender, they circulate voluntarily in select regions and are issued for Utah, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, South Dakota, Florida, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Idaho. Each denomination corresponds directly to its gold content, ranging from 1/1000 troy ounce up to 1/10 troy ounce.
