At over 120 years old, this stunning piece of Americana is highly sought after by collectors!
These 90% Silver Columbian Exposition Commemorative Half Dollars were only minted for two years, from 1892-1893. The reason behind the US Mint starting production of these Silver Half Dollars was to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the Americas. The sales of these Commemorative coins were used to fund raise for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. The 90% Columbian Silver Half Dollars were only supposed to be minted in 1892, however production carried over into 1893 when the World’s Fair, which was supposed to open in October 1892, was delayed until May of 1893. Since these coins were only minted by the US Mint for two years, there was a very limited amount of these coins minted. In total, there were only 2,498,300 Columbian Half Dollars distributed in the world. 950,000 of which were minted in 1892 and 1,548,300 of which were minted in 1893.
The Columbian Half Dollar was the first United States commemorative half dollar to ever be minted, and was the first American coin to feature a historical person. The Columbian Commemorative Half Dollar coin is official US legal tender and has a content of 90% Silver, and 10% copper.
The obverse of this Commemorative silver coin features the profile of Christopher Columbus and includes the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" above his head and "COLUMBIAN HALF DOLLAR" below.
The reverse side of the Columbian Half Dollar is imprinted with a port view of the famous Santa Maria ship, used by Columbus in his iconic trip across the Atlantic Ocean. Above the Santa Maria, there are two hemispheres flanked by the date 1492. The words "WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION CHICAGO" are imprinted along the rim, and the mintage date is at the bottom.
