The Design
Christian Gobrecht Coronet signed the design imprinted in the Liberty Half Eagle Coins from 1838 to 1908. Some details from the original design may have varied over the years. For example, some coins printed “FIVE D.” and others “5 D” for the face value. And the motto “In God, we trust” just appears on the coins struck in 1866. But the main elements remained untouched.
The obverse depicts a left-facing Lady Liberty, with traces of Greek-Roman sculptures. In the image, she wears a crown engraved with the word “LIBERTY” under thirteen stars, representing the original colonies.
The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle with open wings, carrying branches and arrows on its talons and the national shield on its breasts. The inscriptions on this side read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the face value.

The coins in this listing all have the Mint State 63 certification from NGC or PCGS. They all have been professionally graded and holdered by their respective certifier. The protective plastic slab the coin comes in certifies its Mint State grade. These slabs are subject to light abrasion marks, chips, and scuffs with normal wear on them. These marks do not at all hinder the Mint State of the coin assigned to it by NGC or PCGS and they do not devalue the slabbed coin in any way.
