The Design

The obverse of the US Gold Buffalo coins features the Native American Chief through a right profile bust that combines traces from Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. 

The accompanying inscriptions are “LIBERTY” in front of the Native’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials.

The giant American Bison on the reverse has an upstanding depiction on the left side, covering most of the surface, resembling a Buffalo. 

The engravings on the design read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” referring to the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.
