2023 NGC MS-70 1 oz American Buffalo Gold Coin - Thomas J. Uram Label
The first American 24k gold coin is the Gold Buffalo. The U.S. Mint introduced Gold Buffalo Coins to the bullion market in 2006, which contained 1 Troy ounce of 99.99% pure gold.
US Gold Buffalos feature a design inspired by James Earl Fraser’s 1913 Indian Head, reflecting America's heritage.
These Gold Buffalos, in particular, are certified by NGC as MS-70 and sealed in Thomas J. Uram's Special Label.
Thomas J. Uram, former Chairman of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC), significantly influenced US numismatics by advising the Secretary of the Treasury on coin and medal designs. He spearheaded the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act (H.R. 6192), authorizing the minting of new Morgan and Peace Dollars in 2021 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of their original circulation. This act also allows the Mint to produce these coins annually.

The Design
The obverse is imprinted with James Earl Fraser’s depiction of a Native American Chief, showing a right-profile bust incorporating elements from several Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons.
It is also engraved with the inscription “LIBERTY” near the forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F” for the artist’s initials.
The reverse is stamped with the American Bison, covering most of the coin’s surface, which gives the coin its “Buffalo” nickname.
This side also bears the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” denoting the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.
An NGC MS-70 coin
Coin grading services like NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company appraise and grade coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70, depending on their condition.
MS means Mint State, referring to coins fabricated with the same shape as a popular business coin that remained uncirculated. 70, the highest grade on the scale, is for a coin with no visible flaws.
