The Design

James Earl Fraser’s Native American Chief portrayal features the obverse design. It depicts a right-profile bust that combines traces from Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. 

It includes the word “LIBERTY” in front of the Native’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials.

The reverse depicts a giant American bison, upstanding in that it covers most of the surface and resembles a buffalo. 

It also contains the engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” referring to the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.

Third-party services like NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company—appraise and grade coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70, depending on their condition.

According to NGC, “Early Releases” refers to coins purchased from their original mint within the first 30 days of their official release and submitted to NGC appraisal.

MS means Mint State, referring to coins fabricated with the same shape as a popular business coin that remained uncirculated. 70, the highest grade on the scale, is for a coin with no visible flaws.
