The Design

The obverse showcases the Native American Chief’s right profile, combining traces from different Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. 

The engravings accompanying the design are “LIBERTY” in front of the Native American’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials.

On the reverse, a giant American Bison is upstanding facing left and covers most of the surface.

The word “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is on top, along with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The other motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” lies near the animal’s muzzle. Beneath the image, read “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” referring to the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.
