The Design
The Walking Liberty design on the obverse, created by Adolph A. Weinman, depicts Lady Liberty striding towards the sun's rays. She holds oak and laurel branches in one arm while extending the other in a welcoming gesture, with the American flag draped over her shoulder.
Above her arches is the word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is positioned on the lower right, and the year of mintage is at the bottom.
The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle, designed by John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint. The Eagle has the National Shield on its chest, holds arrows and olive branches in its talons, and carries a banner inscribed with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak.
Thirteen stars above the Eagle’s head symbolize the original colonies. Surrounding the image are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR,” indicating face value, weight, metal content, and purity.
