1988 NGC MS-70 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coin - Brown Label

The US Mint first released Silver Eagle coins in 1986 as the premiere silver coin of the American Eagles Program.

US Silver Eagles contain 1 troy oz of 99.9% fine silver, a USD 1 face value, and legal tender status fully guaranteed by the US government.

The American Eagle Program reproduced on Silver Eagles Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design and added John M. Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, Heraldic Eagle Illustration.

At SD Bullion, you can find 1988 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins, certified as MS-70 and sealed in NGC slabs with its Brown Label.

The Design

The Walking Liberty design on the obverse, created by Adolph A. Weinman, depicts Lady Liberty striding towards the sun's rays. She holds oak and laurel branches in one arm while extending the other in a welcoming gesture, with the American flag draped over her shoulder.

Above her arches is the word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is positioned on the lower right, and the year of mintage is at the bottom.

The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle, designed by John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint. The Eagle has the National Shield on its chest, holds arrows and olive branches in its talons, and carries a banner inscribed with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak.

Thirteen stars above the Eagle’s head symbolize the original colonies. Surrounding the image are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR,” indicating face value, weight, metal content, and purity.

An NGC MS-70 coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) is globally renowned for evaluating and grading coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which rates coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.

MS stands for Mint State. Mint State coins have the format of business coins that have never circulated. 70 is the grade attributed to coins with no visible flaws.
