1921-S NGC MS-63 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

1921 was the last strike of the circulating Morgan Silver Dollar. The design would only make a comeback in 2021 when the US Mint released a commemorative collectible version of the coin.

The US Mint used several branches to mint Morgan Dollars, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City. 

Coins with the "S" mint mark were produced at the San Francisco Mint.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty was depicted in a left-profile bust wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

It includes the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

The reverse displays the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. The “S” mint mark from the San Francisco Mint is beneath the laurel wreath.

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” accompany the image. 

An NGC MS-63 Coin

NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company appraises and grades coins independently from sovereign mints. It uses the Sheldon Grading Scale to rank coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
