1921 NGC MS-64 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin - Original Bag Fragment

Morgan Dollars were the official U.S. one-dollar coins from 1878 to 1904. They were designed by George T. Morgan and produced by the U.S. Mint. Each coin contained 0.7734 ounces of silver. 

Production of the Morgan Dollar resumed briefly in 1921 before it was phased out, and in 2021, a special edition was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its last mintage. 

These Morgan Dollars from 1921 come from an original mint shipping bag and have been authenticated by NGC.

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

It also contains the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse displays the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

Additional inscriptions refer to the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70 based on their condition.

MS stands for Mint State, referring to coins issued in the same format as a business circulation coin. 64 is the grade given to coins with average luster, noticeable, light scuff marks, or defects but with attractive overall quality.
