The U.S. Mint introduced Morgan Dollars in 1878, serving as the official dollar coin for circulation until 1904. For the same purpose, a brief resurgence of Morgan Dollar production occurred in 1921.

These coins were produced at several U.S. Mint branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City. However, coinage operations in Carson City ceased in 1893.

The Design

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty’s effigy enhanced by a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara engraved “LIBERTY.” 

The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance are part of the design.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle has outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels encircling it. 

Additional engravings correspond to the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and the “O” mint mark.
