1885 PCGS MS-62 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

The Morgan Silver Dollar holds a prominent place in numismatic history as one of the most famous American silver coin series. It was issued by the US Mint from 1878 to 1904 and once again in 1921 for a quick internal demand.

Designed by George T. Morgan, its notable features include Liberty’s profile on the obverse, modeled after Anna Willess Williams, and an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch on the reverse.

Today, SD Bullion offers 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, certified as MS-62 coins by PCGS.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as MS-62 coin by PCGS;

  • Contains .7734 oz of silver;

  • Produced by the US Mint;

  • Holds USD 1 denomination and legal tender status;

  • The obverse showcases Lady Liberty;

  • The reverse displays the Bald Eagle.

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.”

The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance accompany the image.

The reverse features the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it.

It also contains the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

A PCGS MS-62 coin

PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70 based on their condition.

An MS coin indicates a Mint State coin, that is, a coin issued as a business circulation one. Grade 62 suggests that the coin may present marks and hairlines in focal areas, noticeable scuff marks, and below-average planchet quality. But acceptable overall appearance.
