Morgan Silver Dollars are a treasure in American coinage history. The US Mint crafted them from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921 to serve as the United States’ official dollar coin. In 2021, the US Mint struck a commemorative edition to celebrate the centennial of their last official coinage. 

The coins’ design is named after Mint Engraver George T. Morgan.

The US Mint produced Morgan Dollars through several of its branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.

Those coins minted with the “O” mint mark were issued in the New Orleans Mint.

The Design

Lady Liberty, depicted in a left-profile bust on the obverse, wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance accompany the image.

The Bald Eagle reverse design showcases the eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” complete the design.

An NGC MS-63 Coin

NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company works independently from sovereign mints to appraise and grade coins. It uses the Sheldon Grading Scale to rank coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition. 

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
