1884-O PCGS MS-63 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

From 1878 to 1904, the US Mint produced Morgan Dollars in mass to serve as the circulating dollar coin in the US. The coins weighed .7734 oz of 90% pure silver and had an iconic design created by George T. Morgan.

Morgan Dollars were reintroduced in the market in 1921, right before the introduction of the Peace Dollars.

The US Mint used several branches to manufacture Morgan Dollars, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.

Those coins minted with the “O” mint mark were issued in the New Orleans Mint.

The Design

George T. Morgan designed Lady Liberty on the obverse wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

The image also contains the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle is showcased with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” supplement the design.

PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) appraises and grades coins independently from sovereign mints. It uses the Sheldon Grading Scale to rank coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
