Morgan Silver Dollars are a significant part of American coinage history. The US Mint produced them between 1878 and 1904, with a final issuance in 1921. They served as the country’s official dollar coin. 

Designed by George T. Morgan, after whom they are named, the coins were struck at various US Mint branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until coinage operations in Carson City ended in 1893.

The Design

Lady Liberty is portrayed on the obverse through a left-profile bust wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance are included.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle is showcased with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” complete the design.
