Morgan Silver Dollars may be among the most popular silver coins in the US. They were crafted by the US Mint from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. And, in 2021, a commemorative edition of Morgan Dollars celebrated the centennial of its last official coinage. 

The coins featured George T. Morgan’s design and were named after their designer. The US Mint produced Morgan Dollars through various branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and in Carson City until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.

Those coins minted with the “O” mint mark were issued in the New Orleans Mint.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty, depicted in a left-profile bust, wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

The image includes the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle showcases outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” accompany the image.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
