1884-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin - BU - GSA with box & COA

The US Mint produced Morgan Silver Dollars, the official dollar coin in the US, from 1878 to 1904, once more in 1921. The coin was so popular that the mint released a collectible bullion version in 2021 to celebrate the centennial of the last official strike of the circulating coin.

As the moniker suggests, the Morgan Dollar was named after its designer, George T. Morgan. The US Mint issued them in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City until it ceased coining operations in 1893.

Those Morgan Dollars manufactured from 1882 and 1884 in Carson City were hoarded in the US Treasury until the GSA - General Services Administration was allowed to sell the hoarded silver dollars to the public in 1970. Therefore, these coins are available in very limited quantities and are highly sought after by collectors.

The Design

Lady Liberty, originally designed by George T. Morgan, consists of a left-profile bustin, in which she wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

It also contains the motto “‘E PLURIBUS UNUM,”’ thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

On the reverse side, the Bald Eagle was depicted with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches on its talons, and laurels surrounding it. 

The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the whole design, while the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed above the eagle’s head.
