1880-S PCGS MS-65 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

The US Mint crafted Morgan Silver Dollars from 1878 to 1904 and once more in 1921 for widespread circulation.

Its exquisite design was created by the US Mint’s Fourth Chief Engraver, George T. Morgan, who was inspired by the golden era of American industrial growth.

Over the years, the US Mint produced Morgan Dollars through various branches: Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.

The coins that bear the “S” mint mark identify the San Francisco branch that issued them.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty looks left and wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara bearing the inscription “LIBERTY.” 

It also features the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse depicts the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed above the eagle’s head, the “S” mint mark from the San Francisco branch appears beneath the Eagle, and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the entire design.
