1880-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin - BU - GSA with box & COA

The official circulating US dollar coin between 1878 and 1904 was the Morgan Dollar, Named after its designer, George T. Morgan, and containing 7734 oz of silver.

Morgan Dollars had a quick restrike in 1921 and a commemorative edition in 2021, marking the 100th anniversary of its final circulation minting.

The U.S. Mint facilities in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City. 

The Carson City Mint ceased operations in 1893, but Morgan Dollars minted there between 1882 and 1884 were later discovered in U.S. Treasury reserves. The General Services Administration (GSA) eventually sold these coins to the public in the 1970s, making them rare and highly prized by collectors.

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty’s bust wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

The motto “‘E PLURIBUS UNUM,”’ thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance are part of the design.

The reverse depicts the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, olive branches on its talons, and laurels surrounding it. 

It is also inscribed with the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
