1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin - BU - GSA with Box & COA

The Morgan Dollar was the official U.S. dollar coin in circulation from 1878 to 1904 and was named after its designer, George T. Morgan. Each coin held 0.7734 Troy oz of silver.

After a brief reissue in 1921, the Morgan Dollar was succeeded by the Peace Dollar. These coins were struck at multiple U.S. Mint locations, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City.

Although the Carson City Mint shut down in 1893, some Morgan Dollars from that facility were later found in U.S. Treasury vaults. In the 1970s, the General Services Administration (GSA) released these coins to the public, turning them into sought-after collectibles.

The Design

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty’s bust wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY. "

It also displays the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

The reverse features a Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, olive branches on its talons, and laurels surrounding it. 

It is also inscribed with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
