Silver's Historic Run to an All-Time High in January 2026
Silver entered 2026 already red-hot, opening the year at $74.22 an ounce after nearly doubling in 2025. The rally accelerated almost immediately. By mid-January silver was pushing through the $90s, and in the week of January 26-29, it went fully parabolic, decisively clearing its 46-year-old 1980 nominal all-time high near $50 and then tearing straight through the once-unthinkable $100 an ounce level. The LBMA fix registered $109.61 on January 26, $111.57 on January 27, $112.80 on January 28, and finally an all-time high of $118.45 on January 29, 2026, with an intraday print above $121 an ounce reported on the open market that same session — the highest nominal price silver has ever traded at. The move was driven by a collision of forces: a structural global supply deficit running above 200 million ounces a year, China reclassifying silver as a strategic resource and sharply restricting exports, collapsing COMEX registered inventories, and a wave of physical demand out of India, China, and Japan that simply overwhelmed available above-ground metal.
The euphoria broke almost as fast as it built. On January 30, 2026, silver suffered one of the largest single-day drops in its trading history, falling roughly 30% intraday as CME Group margin hikes triggered a wave of forced liquidations, with the LBMA fix tumbling to $103.19 that day and then sliding further to the mid-$70s by early February. Silver spent the following months digesting that shock, grinding down to a 2026 low near $53.80 in mid-June before stabilizing and climbing back into the $58 to $77 range over the summer. By early September 2026, the LBMA fix stood at $65.57 an ounce — still up sharply from where silver started the year, but a long way from January's historic spike. The video below, recorded the week silver first blew through the 1980 high and the $100 mark on its way to the eventual peak, captures the moment the rally turned truly historic.
