Silver opened 2024 near $24 an ounce and spent the first few months of the year grinding sideways, still boxed in below the stubborn $30 an ounce resistance level that had capped every rally attempt for nearly four years. That changed abruptly in mid-May. After a slow grind higher through the first half of the month, silver broke sharply higher in the third week of May, closing the week of May 20, 2024 at $31.80 an ounce — officially clearing $30 resistance and marking an 11-year high. The move was driven by a falling gold-to-silver ratio, persistent global supply deficits, heavy Eastern demand out of China and India, and hundreds of millions of ounces of physical silver leaving Western derivative exchange vaults.

The breakout proved to be more than a one-week spike. Silver spent the rest of 2024 consolidating in a higher range in the high-$20s to low-$30s before pushing to its high for the year of $34.51 an ounce in late October, as gold simultaneously traded above $2,700 an ounce. Silver finished 2024 at $29.46 an ounce, up more than 20% on the year, having decisively left its multi-year $30 ceiling behind.
