The Morgan Dollar, designed by George T. Morgan, was the standard U.S. dollar coin in circulation from 1878 to 1904. It contained 0.7734 troy ounces of silver.

In 1921, the coin was briefly reissued before being retired. In 2021, a special commemorative edition was released to mark the 100th anniversary of its final minting. Morgan Dollars were struck at several U.S. Mint facilities, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City.

The Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty’s bust wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

It includes the motto “‘E PLURIBUS UNUM,”’ thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

The reverse portrays the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, olive branches on its talons, and laurels encircling it. 

It also contains the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” 

An NGC/PCGS MS-64+ coin

Both third-party services, NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company and PCGS—Professional Coin Grading Service—evaluate and grade coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70. 

For both, an MS-64+ graded coin is slightly better than an MS-64 one. MS stands for Mint State, referring to coins issued in the same format as a business circulation coin. 64 is the grade given to coins with average luster, noticeable, light scuff marks, or defects but with attractive overall quality.
