The Morgan Dollar, designed by George T. Morgan, was the official U.S. dollar coin in circulation from 1878 to 1904. It contained 0.7734 ounces of silver. 

The coin was briefly restruck in 1921, and a commemorative edition was released in 2021 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its final minting. 

Morgan Dollars were produced at U.S. Mint facilities in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City. 

These coins, in particular, were taken from an original bag fragment and submitted for NGC appraisal.

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty’s bust wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

The motto “‘E PLURIBUS UNUM,”’ thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance are part of the design.

The reverse depicts the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, olive branches on its talons, and laurels surrounding it. 

It is also inscribed with the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70 based on their condition.

MS stands for Mint State, referring to coins issued in the same format as a business circulation coin. 64 is the grade given to coins with average luster, noticeable, light scuff marks, or defects but with attractive overall quality.
