NGC/PCGS MS-66 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin - Random Year
The U.S. Mint struck the Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin between 1839 and 1908. With a face value of $5 and composed of 90% gold, these coins were commonly used as legal tender during that era.
However, the economic downturn of the 1930s and the surge in gold prices prompted the government to enact the Gold Confiscation Act, leading to the mass melting of gold coins. Today, the $5 Liberty Half Eagle is considered a relatively rare sample.
At SD Bullion, you can purchase $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle Gold Coins of varied mint years, graded MS-66 by either NGC or PCGS.

The Design
Christian Gobrecht created the design, which differs from other gold coins because it was struck in two types: a rare “No Motto” version, released from 1839 to 1865, and the “With Motto” version, issued from 1866 to 1908.
The obverse showcases Lady Liberty’s left-profile bust, wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY.” The image is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, along with the year of mintage.
The reverse displays the Heraldic Eagle, with the national shield on its chest, olive branches, and arrows in its talons. The accompanying inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.”, which refers to the coin’s face value.
Those coins called “With Motto,” produced from 1866 on, included the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” in a banner above the Eagle.
An NGC or a PCGS MS-66 Coin
PCGS—Professional Coin Grading Service and NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company are independent services that appraise and grade coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.
For both services, MS stands for mint state. It refers to a coin struck in the same format as a business circulation coin that remained uncirculated. Grade 66 indicates that the coin may have contact marks and signs of wear and tear, but it is above average in terms of strike quality and retains its original mint luster.
