The Story Behind the First Ever 5 oz Silver Maple Leaf Bullion Coin

For the first time in history, the Royal Canadian Mint has struck a 5 oz Silver Maple Leaf bullion coin — and SD Bullion is honored to offer this groundbreaking release exclusively to our customers. After nearly two years of collaboration, design refinement, trial striking, and approvals, the Grand Maple is finally here.

This coin represents a major milestone for both SD Bullion and the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM). Not only is it the first 5 oz Silver Bullion Maple Leaf ever produced, but it is also the first 5 oz silver bullion coin the RCM has ever released. Collectors and investors alike now have access to a brand-new format featuring one of the world’s most recognized and respected bullion designs.

A New Canvas for an Iconic Design

Silver enthusiasts are already familiar with the 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf — a globally trusted bullion coin known for its security features, brilliant strike, and unmistakable maple leaf design. But seeing this design expanded onto a five-ounce canvas elevates it to an entirely different level.

Why 5 oz?

The RCM and SD Bullion have long recognized a gap in the market for premium 5 oz bullion pieces. U.S. stackers fell in love with the format during the America the Beautiful (ATB) 5 oz silver coin series, which ended in 2019, leaving a void that no major mint had filled.

SD Bullion has been developing 5 oz products through our Truth Series, Awakening Series, and Commander Series — all of which proved incredibly popular. This strong demand helped initiate the conversation that ultimately led to the creation of the Grand Maple.

Once you hold a 5 oz coin in your hand, the appeal becomes obvious. The weight, the presence, and the expanded visual detail simply stand apart from other bullion formats.

The Design: Bold, Elevated, and Unmistakably Canadian

RCM designers worked through multiple iterations, species options, and artistic concepts before landing on a large, striking Red Maple Leaf centered prominently on the coin’s face.

Why the Red Maple?

  • It’s the most common maple species in North America

  • It grows coast-to-coast in the U.S.

  • It is the official tree of Rhode Island

  • Its leaf is featured on the Canadian flag

  • It offers the boldest, widest, most impactful profile for the 5 oz canvas

The result is a design that is both iconic and modern — with back-to-center radial lines that enhance security and visual depth far more noticeably than on the 1 oz Maple Leaf.

The absence of a stem was another intentional choice. By maximizing the leaf’s size and detail, the design becomes immediately recognizable, visually dominant, and unmistakably unique.

Unmatched Royal Canadian Mint Quality

As discussed in the video, RCM’s quality-control process is among the strictest anywhere in the world. Even the trial strikes — which already look flawless to the naked eye — failed internal QC. That level of scrutiny ensures that each final production coin meets the highest possible standard.

Key Features

  • Radial security lines identical to the 1 oz Maple Leaf

  • Micro-engraved laser mark containing the coin’s production year

  • Exclusive SD Bullion strike not offered by any other US dealer

  • Ships in individual capsules to preserve finish and prevent spotting

  • 36 coins per box, totaling 180 oz of silver

Collectors will appreciate that all coins — graded or raw — come from the same strike quality, meaning there are no separate “premium strike” batches. Every Grand Maple is struck at exceptional consistency.
