The Design

The obverse displays the design by Adolph A. Weinman for the Half Dollar coin, created in 1917. 

The Walking Liberty personifies the nation, striding forward and holding oak and laurel branches, symbols of strength and victory. She is draped in the American flag, illuminated by the rising sun, representing hope and a new dawn for freedom. 

The inscriptions read “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage.

The reverse depicts an Eagle with open wings in a perching movement, encircled by engravings regarding the coin’s weight, metal content, and purity read: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ,” and “FINE SILVER.” The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” completes the design.

An NGC MS-70 coin

Third-party services like NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) use the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70, as a standard for grading coins worldwide.

MS stands for Mint State and corresponds to a coin issued in the same format as a widely circulated sample. However, it has never been in circulation, so it shows no signs of wear, tear, or contact with other coins. Hence, the grade 70.
