The Design

The obverse depicts King Charles III’s effigy designed by Martin Jennings. The engravings surrounding His Majesty’s bust read “CHARLES III·D·G·REX·F·D·5 POUNDS·2024,” which corresponds to the Latin inscriptions “By the Grace of God, King,” the coin’s face value, and the year of issuance.

The reverse, designed by US Mint Chief Engraver John M. Mercanti, combines the Lion, a symbol of the British government, with the Eagle, the American national icon, in a single portrayal.

The Liberty Bell privy mark is on the lower right, next to the Chief Engraver’s initials. The engravings on this side read “THE LION AND THE EAGLE” and “2024.”
