To celebrate the Year of the Dragon in 2024, the Australian Perth Mint prepared an exclusive Coin Set inspired by the Lunar Series III, gathering the Chinese Dragons in half-ounce silver coins.
This coin set features ten 99.99% pure silver coins weighing 1/2 oz. They feature alluring colored and gilded designs for the Nine Sons, the nine types of Dragons considered sacred symbols in Chinese culture.
In addition, these coins also honor Queen Elizabeth II, former leader of the British Commonwealth, through her Memorial Obverse design.

The Design
These coins share Jody Clark’s Memorial Obverse design of Queen Elizabeth II, which, besides Her Majesty’s bust, features her reigning years “1952-2022,” the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “AUSTRALIA,” and the coin’s weight, purity, metal content, and denomination through “1/2 oz 9999 Ag 50 CENTS.”
Each reverse design features a different dragon from the Nine Sons, with lively tones coloring their swirling bodies. The inscriptions accompanying the design correspond to “DRAGON,” “2024,” the Chinese character for the creature, and “P125,” mint mark, from the Perth Mint.
The tenth coin, though, is the only silver coin gilded in gold. It showcases a dragon in a frontal close-up with water cascading from its mouth.
2024 - The Year of the Dragon
The Dragon is one of the twelve animals that compose the Chinese Lunar Calendar. As the fifth Zodiac Sign and the only mythical one, the Dragon is related to noble characteristics like strength, bravery, and persistence.
As the signs interchange annually, a complete calendar cycle lasts 12 years. Therefore, besides 2024, previous years of the dragon were 2012, 2000, 1988, and so on.
