The Design

The obverse is a reviewed version of the Indian Head Nickel, issued in 1913, whose design was created by James Earle Fraser. The image depicts a right-profile bust of a Native American Indian, combining traces from different tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. The inscriptions engraved on the outer rim are “LIBERTY” in front of the Chief’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” corresponding to the artist’s initial on the lower left.

The reverse design is the image that names the coin: a giant American Bison in an upstanding position. Along with the picture, the words: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” arch over the buffalo. “IN GOD WE TRUST” lies aside near the animal’s muzzle.
