The Ten Ounce British Valiant Silver Coin is the largest British Silver Coin produced in the world along with the 10 oz Queen’s Beast coins. The Valiant coin is minted by the Royal Mint using .9999 pure silver bullion.
The story behind the design of the British Valiant Silver Coin is one of great heroism. The story takes place in the 3rd century in what is modern-day Libya. The city of Silene was being terrorized by a venom-spewing dragon that was fed human sacrifices to keep it from destroying the city. The people who were fed to the dragon were chosen by lottery. One day, the king’s daughter was chosen to be sacrificed. Despite the king’s desperate attempts to bribe the people to spare his daughter, she was sent to be sacrificed. Saint George happened to be riding by on his horse as the princess was being presented to the dragon. St. George decided that he was going to stop the dragon’s reign of terror. St. George charged at the dragon and severely wounded it with his lance. He then led the dragon back to the city, where he said that he would kill the dragon, but only if 15,000 people from Silene converted to Christianity. The people agreed, and the dragon was beheaded.
The obverse features a beautifully-detailed portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Surrounding her are the words “10 POUNDS”, “ELIZABETH II”, & “D.G. REG. F.D.”- which stands for Dei Gratia Regina which translated from Latin means “By the Grace of God, Queen”. The image of the queen is set against a diamond pattern, making her image stand out.
The reverse features St. George riding a horse and defeating a dragon by stabbing the dragon with a lance. St. George is depicted in full armor along with a shield attached to the horse. Above the design are the words “10oz FINE SILVER 999.9” and below is “2020”.
