The Design
The obverse was designed by Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty to be imprinted on the 1917 Half Dollar coin.
It portrays Lady Liberty walking toward the sun's rays with the American flag draped on her shoulder and oak branches on her left arm. She welcomes those seeking shelter on American lands with her stretched right arm.
The word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage are also present..
John Mercanti’s original reverse design depicts the heraldic eagle with spread wings around a star-spangled shield, carrying the “E Pluribus Unum” banner, meaning “out of many, one.” The thirteen stars above the eagle represent the original colonies.
The West Point mint mark is on the reverse side, near the olive branch carried by the eagle.
The whole image is surrounded by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
An NGC PF-70 and SP-70 Coin
NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company works apart from sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70 depending on their condition.
PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes. Because it is a reverse-proof coin, the background surfaces are frosted, contrasting with the brilliant images engraved. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
The Enhanced Uncirculated version, though not as reflective as a proof coin, has a brighter look than regular bullion coins and more visible design elements. It undergoes a special polishing process called “burnishing,” which cleans the blanks from unwanted oxides formed during the annealing and rimming processes.
SP-70 stands for Specimen-70, which describes a hybrid between Mint State and Proof with absolutely no imperfections.
