2009 (MMIX) PCGS MS-70 Ultra High Relief $20 Double Eagle Coin
The $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle stands as one of the most celebrated gold coins ever issued by the U.S. Mint.
Debuting in 1907 during Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency, it was intended for widespread circulation. Bearing a $20 face value and containing .9675 troy oz of gold, it was produced until 1933 amid the economic fallout from the 1929 stock market crash.
Decades later, in 2009, the U.S. Mint brought back the Double Eagle as a limited-edition collector’s piece. This version was struck in pure 24-karat gold and showcased a stunning Ultra High Relief design, elevating its artistry and historical significance.
Today, SD Bullion offers the 2009 (MMIX) $20 Double Eagle Ultra High Relief Coin, graded by PCGS as an MS-70 coin.

The Design
The obverse replicates Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Double Eagle design, also used in US Gold Eagle coins.
It showcases Lady Liberty on a march to the future, representing national progress, with a torch and an olive branch for enlightenment and peace. The sun's rays are rising in the background.
It also displays the Capitol Building, the word “LIBERTY”, the year of issuance in Roman letters, and the stars encircling the whole design, representing the states.
On the reverse, a Bald Eagle flies above the sun. The accompanying inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
The 2009 Edition
In the 2009 edition, the original Saint-Gaudens’ design was digitally mapped and imprinted in ultra-high relief. That created a 3-D effect on the design elements, making the most intricate details even more noticeable.
Some design elements were also included. The year of issuance in Roman letters reflects the year of mintage (2009), four stars were added to complete the current 50 states, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is now at the bottom of the reverse design.
A PCGS MS-70 Ultra High Relief Coin
PCGS, which stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, is a renowned third-party grading service that appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.
MS or Mint State refers to a coin with the same format as a business circulation that remained uncirculated. 70 is the grade given to coins with no visible flaws.
Ultra-high relief is a coin design technique that creates a three-dimensional effect, with the design raised above the coin's edge.
