Product Details

Beginning in 1982, the Denver mint began manufacturing half dollar pieces commemorating the 250th birthday of George Washington. Unlike coins manufactured in the past decades preceding it, their designs were unique from standard currency and they contained silver content. The US Mint continued to strike $0.50 and $1 pieces until in 1984 when the US Mint manufactured their first gold commemorative coin. This was the first time the US minted a coin struck in gold since 1933.

Ever since 1984, the US Mint has continued to strike new designs commemorating and honoring significant people, events, culture, and landmarks. These various designs include but are certainly not limited to Mount Rushmore, Torch Runner for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Baseball Hall of Fame, the Old Mint at San Francisco, and Breast Cancer Awareness.
