2009 (MMIX) NGC MS-70 Ultra High Relief $20 Double Eagle Coin
The $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is one of the most iconic gold coins ever produced by the U.S. Mint.
Originally issued in 1907 under President Theodore Roosevelt, it was created for general circulation with a $20 face value and contained .9675 troy ounces of gold. Production ended in 1933 following the economic crisis sparked by the 1929 stock market crash.
In 2009, the U.S. Mint reintroduced the Double Eagle as a special, limited-edition release. This modern version was struck in 24-karat gold and featured an Ultra High Relief design, highlighting its artistic detail and collectible appeal.
Today, SD Bullion offers the 2009 (MMIX) $20 Double Eagle Ultra High Relief Coin, graded by NGC as an MS-70 coin.

The Design
The obverse reproduces Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Double Eagle design, in which Lady Liberty marches forward to symbolize the national progress, carrying a torch and an olive branch, representing enlightenment and peace. The sun's rays are rising in the background.
The artistry also illustrates the Capitol Building, the word “LIBERTY”, the year of issuance in Roman letters, and the stars encircling the whole design, representing the states.
The reverse depicts a flying Bald Eagle above the sun. The inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
The 2009 Edition
In the 2009 edition, the original Saint-Gaudens’ design was digitally mapped and imprinted in ultra-high relief. That created a 3-D effect on the design elements, making the most intricate details even more noticeable.
Some design elements were also included. The year of issuance in Roman letters reflects the year of mintage (2009), four stars were added to complete the current 50 states, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is now at the bottom of the reverse design.

Ultra-high relief is a coin design technique that creates a three-dimensional effect, with the design raised above the coin's edge.
