2009 (MMIX) $20 Double Eagle Ultra High Relief with Box & COA

The $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle is one of the most iconic gold coins produced by the US Mint.

It was first issued in 1907, during President Theodore Roosevelt’s government, as a widespread circulation coin bearing legal tender status, a denomination of $20, with an actual gold content of .9675 Troy oz. It was discontinued in 1933 due to the economic crisis that followed the Wall Street collapse in 1929.

In 2009, the US Mint rescued the $20 Double Eagle coin and released a special and limited strike. It elevated its purity level to make it a 24k gold coin and provided its design with an Ultra-High Relief effect.

The Design

Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Double Eagle obverse design showcases Lady Liberty marching forward as a symbol of national progress, carrying a torch and an olive branch, meaning enlightenment and peace. The sun's rays are rising in the backdrop.

The image is supplemented by the depiction of the Capitol Building on the lower left, the word “LIBERTY” on top, the year of issuance written in Roman letters on the lower right, and the stars encircling the whole design, representing the states.

The reverse design features a flying Bald Eagle above the sun. The inscriptions on this side are on top and read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”

The 2009 Edition

In the 2009 edition, the original Saint-Gaudens’ design was digitally mapped and imprinted in ultra-high relief. That created a 3-D effect on the design elements, making the most intricate details even more noticeable.

In addition, some design elements were included. The year of issuance in Roman letters reflects the year of mintage (2009), four stars were added to complete the current 50 states, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is now at the bottom of the reverse design.
