The $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins were first released in 1907 during President Roosevelt's administration. 

Minted by the U.S. Mint for general circulation, these coins were legal tender with a $20 denomination and contained .9675 oz of gold. 

Early versions of the coin are notable for lacking the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the reverse near the rising sun at the bottom edge, which was added in mid-1908.

The Design

The obverse was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who showcased Lady Liberty walking forward as a symbol of the national march to the future. The torch she carries represents enlightenment, and the olive branch represents peace. 

It also includes the word “LIBERTY,” the Capitol Building, and the year of issuance.

The reverse displays a flying Bald Eagle. The inscriptions on this side are on top and read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
