1996 PCGS PR-69 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coin

The American Eagles program debuted in 1986, introducing Gold and Silver Eagles as the United States’ official gold and silver bullion coins.

In addition to the bullion versions, the US Mint also released gold and silver Proof Eagle coins for collecting purposes. These coins display a stunning mirror-like luster that highlights every design detail.

In 1996, the US Mint delivered 498,293 Proof Silver Eagle coins to the market.

The Design

Weinman’s Walking Liberty holds oak and laurel branches in one arm and an extended right arm in a welcome sign. The American flag is draped on her shoulder. The image also contains the word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage.

Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle has thirteen stars over its head, representing the original colonies. It carries the Great Seal on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. 

The inscriptions describing face value, weight, metal content, and purity encircle the image and read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.

A PCGS PR-69 Coin 

PCGS, which stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, operates independently of sovereign mints, evaluating and grading coins. Utilizing the Sheldon Scale, whose grading system ranges from 1 to 70, they meticulously assess coins based on their condition.

According to the scale, PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
