In 1890, the South African Mint was established. However, when the county was absorbed into the British Empire in 1902, the mint was closed and replaced by a new branch of the British Royal Mint. The inscriptions "KRUGERRAND" and "FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER R1" encircle an image of a Springbok Antelope running across broad plains with mountains in the distance on the reverse of the coin.
