The Design

Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty obverse design of the Gold Eagles Coin is inspired by its original version portrayed in the 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin.

Lady Liberty is depicted as the nation’s personification, whose march forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch, symbolizes the American evolution to progress, peace, and enlightenment.

The coin’s mintage year on the lower right, which used to be written in Roman letters, is now described in Cardinal numbers. The Capitol Building appears on the lower left, and the word “LIBERTY” is engraved on top, next to the several six-pointed stars that encircle the whole image.

The reverse design showcases a family of eagles in which a female Bald Eagle cherishes its hatchling under her wing while the male Eagle perches its nest.

The mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are inscribed on both sides of the image. The coin’s weight, metal content, and face value are at the bottom, described as “1 OZ. FINE GOLD - 50 DOLLARS,” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” are engraved on top.

Mintage

In 1992, the US Mint produced only 275,00 of the 1 oz American Gold Eagles, weighing 1.0909 troy ounces (or 33.931 grams) with a diameter of 1.287 inches (32.70 mm).

These coins are 22-karat gold (.9167 fineness), added with 3% silver and 5.33% copper to ensure durability and robustness.

The silver and copper alloy are extra additions, guaranteeing a full one-troy-ounce pure gold content. That means this coin is slightly heavier than similar gold bullion coins in the market, such as the .9999 fine Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.

An NGC MS-69 Graded Coin

The NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company uses the Sheldon Scale to evaluate the coins submitted to its analysis.

The Sheldon Scale ranks coins according to their condition and authenticity, grading them from 1 to 70. The higher the number the coin gets, the closer to perfection it is.

A Mint State (MS) coin describes a coin produced for regular distribution that has never circulated. The number 69 means the coin's original luster is preserved despite almost invisible minor contact marks or flaws.
