The Design
The obverse showcases Lady Liberty as designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, initially featured in the 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin.
Lady Liberty walks forward in the image, carrying a torch and an olive branch. Her march ahead symbolizes the nation’s evolution to progress, peace, and enlightenment.
“LIBERTY” arches over the image, the Capitol Building is imprinted on the lower left, and the coin’s mintage year is on the right, in Roman letters, along with the West Point’s “W” mint mark. Six-pointed stars encircle the image.
The reverse side reproduces the premiere design of the Bald Eagle, which consists of a female Bald Eagle cherishing its hatchling under her wing while the male Eagle perches their nest.
“UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is engraved on top, the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” flank the image, and the coin’s information regarding weight, metal content, and denomination are on the bottom and read “1 OZ. FINE GOLD - 50 DOLLARS.”
Mintage
The debuting strike of the proof version accounted for 446,290 units of Proof American Gold Eagles, weighing 1.0909 troy ounces (or 33.931 grams) with a diameter of 1.287 inches (32.70 mm).
American Gold Eagle coins are 22-karat gold (.9167 fineness). The US Mint includes 3% silver and 5.33% copper in the alloy, making them durable and robust. However, they are guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of gold, as the silver and copper are further added on top of the pure gold content.
A PCGS PR-69 Coin
The PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service and other renowned third-party grading services work independently from sovereign mints to appraise and certify coins using the Sheldon Scale.
This scale ranks coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.
The PCGS names PR a Proof Coin, produced for collection purposes, and attributes the grade 69 to coins whose original luster is preserved despite almost invisible minor contact marks or flaws.
