The US Mint launched the US Gold Eagles in 1986 as the flagship gold coin of the American Eagles Program.

The series' first release was a 22k Gold Eagle bullion coin containing a full Troy oz of gold. It features designs by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Miley Busiek. 

Proof Gold Eagles were introduced a few months later. Their mirror-like finish enhances the standard design and highlights the most intricate details.

The Obverse Design

The obverse of Gold Eagles stamp Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ design Augustus Saint-Gaudens' iconic Lady Liberty, used on the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin from 1907 to 1933, features the obverse. 

In the image, she strides confidently forward, torch in hand, representing enlightenment and hope. The design also contains the Capitol Building, the word “LIBERTY,” and the coin’s mintage year.

Reverse Design Type 1

Type 1 refers to Miley Busiek's original reverse design. 

The reverse features a family of eagles and inscriptions detailing weight, metal content, and face value reading “1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD—25 DOLLARS.” 

Additionally, the engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” enhance the design.

Reverse Design Type 2

Type 2 corresponds to the design update of 2021, which celebrates the 35th anniversary of the American Eagles Program. Jennie Norris portrayed the majestic bald eagle in a close-up depiction with a deep gaze, highlighted hooked beak, and the same inscriptions of the original design.

The inscriptions on this side repeat the original ones.
