The Coin’s Design

The obverse reproduces Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty design, initially used in the 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin. 

The image represents the nation's march to progress, peace, and enlightenment as Lady Liberty walks forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch. The Capitol Building is imprinted on the lower left. 

The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on top, the coin’s mintage year is in Roman letters on the right, and stars encircle the image.

The original reverse design displays a familiar scenery where a female Bald Eagle cherishes its hatchling under her wing while the male Eagle perches their nest. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches over the image, which is flanked by the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The coin’s description of weight, metal content, and face value are at the bottom rim.

In 2021, the reverse design was revamped to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle Program. The Bald Eagle got a close-up depiction with a deep gaze and a highlighted hooked beak, as created by Emily Damstra.
