The 1986 American Silver Eagle was the first Silver Eagle produced by the US Mint. After over three decades, it is astonishing that there are still 1986 Silver Eagles that are in perfect condition. These Eagles will be absolutely flawless as indicated by their grade of MS-70 which is given to them by NGC. This grade is so rare that just 1.1% of all 1986 American Silver Eagles sent in to NGC are graded as MS-70.
The obverse of these silver coin features the iconic image of Lady Liberty in her flowing robes holding an olive branch in her left hand and outstretching her right arm in front of her. The US motto that is minted on all US coins, “IN GOD WE TRUST” is minted to the right of her, with the word “LIBERTY” minted with spaced out letters along the top of the coin. The coin’s year of “1986” will be minted at the very bottom.
The reverse of the American Silver Eagle features the iconic Heraldic Eagle design which is a bald eagle with a shield in front of it bearing stripes. The eagle holds a banner in its beak featuring the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, and the eagle grasps a branch in one claw and arrows in the other. There are 13 stars above the eagle’s head, and above that are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”. Minted below the eagle are the words “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR”.
